Policy Brief #4: EXPLORING 3D PRINTED AND MODULAR HOMES AS SOLUTIONS TO HAWAIʻI’S HOUSING CRISIS

This brief examines two relatively new types of construction: 3D printed homes and modular homes. It assesses their advantages and disadvantages to see whether they can help to alleviate Hawaiʻi’s housing crisis.

Our takeaway: Navigating the complexities of local zoning laws, land use regulations, and community resistance may present further barriers to the widespread implementation of both 3D printed and modular homes. Addressing these challenges will require collaborative efforts among policymakers, industry stakeholders, and communities to develop innovative strategies that balance cost-effectiveness, sustainability, and resilience while ensuring equitable access to safe and affordable housing for all residents.
